Frequently Asked Questions
How AWEAR Works
How does AWEAR work?
AWEAR helps you understand your mental state in real time. It uses EEG sensors around the ear to capture brain activity, and AI to translate patterns into simple insights like stress, focus, and mental load displayed in the AWEAR mobile app.
What is EEG?
EEG (electroencephalography) is a technology that’s been used for over 100 years to measure brain activity. It detects tiny electrical signals generated by millions of neurons firing together, for example when you feel an emotion or focus on a task.
AWEAR brings this powerful, well-established technology into a consumer wearable, using AI to translate these brain signals into simple insights about your mental state.
How does AWEAR provide insights about my mental patterns?
AWEAR tracks patterns in brain-related signals over time and uses AI to translate changes into simple indicators of mental effort, balance, and activation, shown in the mobile app to help you understand how your mind responds throughout the day.
When needed, it gently nudges you with a soothing vibration and simple prompts to pause, breathe, and reset in the moment.
AWEAR is designed to support awareness and self-reflection and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.
Scientific Foundations
Is AWEAR based on scientific research?
Yes. AWEAR builds on decades of research in neuroscience, EEG, and affective computing. These fields study how patterns of brain activity relate to cognitive and emotional processes.
AWEAR applies these scientific foundations by combining EEG sensing with advanced signal processing and AI to translate brain signals into meaningful insights.
Has the technology been validated or tested?
Yes. AWEAR has conducted internal testing and neuroscience validation to evaluate its sensing technology. We also work with neuroscientists and clinicians affiliated with institutions such as Stanford Medicine, UCSF, and other longevity organizations, to address specific use cases and gather feedback.
AWEAR is designed as a consumer wellness wearable to support awareness and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.
Do you have neuroscientists or researchers on your team?
Yes. AWEAR is developed by a multidisciplinary team that includes engineers as well as experts in neuroscience, computational neuroscience, and psychophysiology. We also collaborate with researchers and academic institutions on studies and peer-reviewed publications.
What AWEAR Can (and Cannot) Do
Can AWEAR support stress awareness and emotional balance?
AWEAR helps you become more aware of patterns in your mental activity. By noticing shifts earlier, it can help you pause, reflect, and build habits that support stress awareness and emotional balance over time.
AWEAR is a wellness wearable designed to support awareness and wellbeing and is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition.
Can AWEAR diagnose mental health conditions?
No. AWEAR is not a medical device and does not diagnose mental health conditions.
It is a wellness wearable that provides insights into patterns in signals associated with brain activity to support personal awareness and wellbeing. These insights are not medical evaluations, and AWEAR is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition.
What makes AWEAR different from other wearables?
Most wearables today track sleep, cardiovascular, and metabolic wellbeing. AWEAR focuses on mental wellbeing, another key pillar of longevity.
Using discreet EEG sensing behind the ear, it translates patterns related to brain activity into simple insights about focus, stress, and recovery.
Instead of complex data, AWEAR provides clear, practical feedback to help you understand how your mind responds throughout the day and build habits that support your overall wellbeing.
App & Notifications
How do I receive insights from AWEAR?
Insights are delivered through the AWEAR mobile app, where patterns in signals associated with brain activity are translated into simple, easy-to-understand insights.
AWEAR may also provide gentle, discreet notifications, including subtle vibrations, to support awareness throughout the day without being disruptive, and notifications can be turned off at any time in the app.
Can I pause notifications if I don’t want to receive them?
Yes. You can manage or turn off notifications at any time in the app settings.
Do I need a paid membership to access the app and see my data?
No. We currently offer free lifetime app membership for early Beta testers. Future access may vary depending on the product version and release stage, and any membership options will be clearly communicated at the time of purchase or app setup.
Is my personal data secure?
Yes. AWEAR treats signals associated with brain activity as sensitive information and is designed with privacy and security in mind.
Data is handled using industry-standard security practices to help protect your information, and you can control your data at any time, including accessing or deleting it within the app.
Device & Wearability
Can I wear AWEAR if I use glasses or ear devices?
Yes. AWEAR is designed to fit comfortably around the ear and is compatible with glasses or other ear-worn items for many users.
Fit may vary depending on individual anatomy and device combinations, so small adjustments may help optimize comfort and performance. If it doesn’t feel right, we offer a 15-day return policy so you can try AWEAR with confidence.
Can I wear AWEAR while sleeping?
Yes. AWEAR can be worn during sleep, and many Beta users find it comfortable. Fit may vary depending on individual preference and the current design, and the form factor will continue to evolve. For the latest guidance, we recommend checking the most recent product instructions.
Can I wear AWEAR while working out?
AWEAR can be worn during everyday activities and light movement, but we currently do not recommend using it during workouts or intense physical activity. The ear patch is water- and sweat-resistant, while the device itself is not yet water-resistant. As the hardware and algorithms evolve, support for a wider range of activities may improve in future versions.
Can I wear AWEAR in the sauna?
No. AWEAR is not recommended for use in sauna conditions, as high heat, humidity, and sweat can affect both the device and the adhesive patches.
Is the device water or sweat resistant?
The AWEAR device is not water-resistant and is not intended for use in water, such as showering or swimming. It may tolerate normal perspiration during daily activities. The adhesive ear patch is designed to be water- and sweat-resistant for everyday use.
How long does the battery last?
The current Beta version of AWEAR typically lasts up to about 14 hours on a single charge, depending on usage. Battery performance may improve over time as we continue to release firmware updates during the Beta phase.
Adhesive Patches
How long does one adhesive patch last?
Each adhesive patch lasts approximately one week, depending on skin type, activity level, and environment.
Will the patches irritate dry or sensitive skin?
The adhesive ear patches are designed for comfortable everyday wear and are suitable for most users. However, skin reactions can vary, and people with dry or sensitive skin may experience irritation.
If irritation occurs, remove the patch and discontinue use, and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist.
Are the patches sweat or water resistant?
Yes. The adhesive ear patches are designed to be sweat- and water-resistant for normal daily wear. However, heavy perspiration or prolonged water exposure may affect adhesion and performance.
Where can I buy additional patches?
You can request additional adhesive patches by contacting the AWEAR team at contact@awear.us or through our website, and we’ll share the latest available options.
